Which is Best For You??Canon RF 70-200mm F4 L IS USM:
The 70-200 f/4 lenses do not require this ring to be mounted on a tripod - the camera body tripod insert can be used. But, this setup is front heavy. A top-notch ball head can handle this load, but a lesser one will drop some amount after it is tightened. Care must also be taken to not tip the off-balance tripod forward.
The RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM lens uses two NANO USM focus motors, which is a first for Canon autofocus lenses. Close-focus performance is enhanced thanks to the RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM lens floating optical system. A high degree of quietness, power saving, and high-speed operation can be achieved without sacrificing the compact size of the lens.
RF 70-200 F4 should be very compact & lightweight.. No need to « downgrade » to another « white elephant of the EF era.. » That elephant is quite compact and nice, actually, like a cute baby elephant. Just wait for its cute baby the soon to be released RF 70-200 F4. The RF f/2.8 was disappointing to me and a few people, at least
I own both the Canon EF 80-200mm f2.8 Magic Drainpipe and the Nikon F 70-200mm f2.8E FL (I’m slowly switching systems from Canon to Nikon, due to the again crippled video in the EOS R and the excellent video in the Nikon Z line: plus of course ergonomics, I don’t like touchbars and I do like joysticks, like I enjoyed in my 5D series cameras).
The f/2.8 lens has significantly less peripheral shading, even in the f/2.8 vs. f/4 comparison. The f/4 lens has dramatically less barrel distortion at the wide end and less pincushion distortion at 105mm. I have no experience with the 70-200 f4, but have the 24-105 f4 and it is a beautiful lens for studio portraiture when you have studio lighting. It basically lives on my camera and I choose it

But with fewer elements in the construction, Sony’s significantly reduced the weight from just under 1.5kg to just over 1kg, saving almost a third. Indeed it even shaves 25g from the weight of the Canon RF 70-200 2.8 to become the lightest of its peer group. Tamron’s 70-180 2.8 is 225g lighter still, but has a shorter range.
With the substantial price savings you get with the Sony 70-200mm f/4 over the f/2.8 version (over $1,400), you can easily buy an extra prime lens or two that will serve you much better.
